Spanish botanical ingredient supplier Nektium has announced a US patent for its branded ingredient Zynamite, which is derived from the mango tree.

Zynamite, an extract of mango (Mangifera indica) leaves, was granted US Patent 10,537,604, titled Compositions for Enhancing Brain Activity.

Nektium, which is based in Las Palmas, Spain, launched Zynamite in Europe at the Vitafoods trade show in Geneva, Switzerland in 2018. It launched in Asia at the HI Japan show in Tokyo that same year, and was introduced to the US market at the Supply Side West trade show in Las Vegas, NV in 2019.

Nektium said the caffeine-free ingredient has been used in ‘smart’ supplements and egaming formulations in Japan.  The new patent will open the door for similar formulations in the US market.  The main active ingredient in the extract is mangiferin, which in addition to its cognitive support activities has been researched for a variety of other effects.

Research backs ingredient’s effects

Nektium points to four double blind, randomized controlled trials that back the ingredient’s brain-activating effects. The papers have been published in peer reviewed journals, the company says.

"The currency of the nutraceutical ingredient industry is scientific evidence obtained from double blind, randomised controlled clinical studies conducted by reputable academic departments and CRO's, and published in leading peer-reviewed journals.  Nektium has made a major investment in the clinical research backing Zynamite®and continues to invest in ongoing clinical studies," said Dr. Nigel Gericke, Nektium's science director. "Our intention is to keep building the clinical research base and intellectual property supporting Zynamite as a premium branded ingredient."

The most recent study the company has done on the ingredient looked at its role in ameliorating muscle damage after strenuous exercise. The researchers found that in a double blind protocol in which university students competed in a 10K race and performed a jump test, that Zynamite combined with quercetin delayed muscle fatigue and attenuated post exercise soreness.

Zynamite has already won some prestigious awards, including two from NutraIngredients (best Sports Nutrition Ingredient in 2018 and a best research award in 2019), NutraIngredients-USA’s sister website covering the European market.
